So by now, we should be in the United States again. But we’re not. I know this is going to sound wildly crazy (wink, wink), but I made a mistake. A big one.
Having wanted to visit Jasper and Banff National Parks in Canada ever since some fellow travelers first told us about their blue-green glacier-fed lakes and gushing waterfalls, we planned our route from Alaska back down to the lower 48 states to include passing through Alberta. We enjoyed a beautiful weekend hiking Jasper trails that showcased vibrantly-colored water before heading down the Icefield Parkway en route to Banff. Upon arrival, we saw our campground was full and were relieved to have already made a reservation. Everything was turning out perfectly! Pulling up to our site, we realized we would need to turn around and park in the opposite direction in order for our door to open out towards our picnic table rather than the road. With five children, this is always very important to us. And that’s when things went wrong.
The road was T-shaped at the end, and turning around should have been a very simple task. Somehow, I got disoriented after making a turn and backed right into a tree. Our radiator was damaged, effectively disabling the motorhome, and now we are stuck until new parts arrive. Additionally, there is a decent amount of body damage to the rear of the coach, enough that we are concerned about water intrusion. I can hardly think about it all without feeling like a complete idiot. I’m still plagued with “if only” thoughts. If only I had waited for Ali to spot me. If only we hadn’t switched out drivers that night. If only I hadn’t turned a bit too far. If only.
In the end, it was an accident. And we’re stuck in Banff National Park. Banff, my friends. I suppose it could be worse….
