Located at Cape Perpetua near the Spouting Horn and Cook’s Chasm in Yachats, Oregon, Thor’s Well is fascinating but dangerous. Powerful waves sweep over and into the pit, threatening to wash to sea bystanders who venture too near. Often, these waves appear to remain fairly low and mild, only to suddenly rush forth in a powerful display of strength and unpredictability.
As you watch, notice how the water seems to be sucked down into this pit, believed to be at least 20 feet deep, only to rise again and fall again. If you find yourself traveling Highway 101 in Oregon, you may wish to pull over and see this incredible sight for yourself. It will be most spectacular during high tide or a storm. Just be cautious; it is safest to observe Thor’s Well from a viewing platform.
