When we hit the road in an RV, we had an idealistic picture in mind of the places we’d be camping. We imagined our little home nestled in the woods, surrounded by towering trees with birds singing in the morning, nearby trails to explore, and evening campfires with friends. In reality, we have found RV parks meeting all these ideals to be few and far between. So when we come upon a place with sites surrounded by enough trees to offer privacy and natural views, we get pretty excited. And when the staff goes above and beyond to be helpful, it’s a tremendous bonus. But Crater Lake RV Park has topped even that!
Upon pulling into our site, we opened our blinds and saw… trees. It was refreshing to enjoy a space so natural and private.
One of the first things I did was take our three youngest children on a short hike down to the Rogue River. The trail from the campground is gorgeous and leads to several river vistas. Following the main trail in the opposite direction, we discovered Hidden Lake with a dam and a cut-through to a public picnic and fishing area. From there, we found another path through a pine forest with lush green undergrowth. It seemed that every where we looked, there was more to discover.
Back at the campground, we learned there was going to be a little shindig the following evening. As it turns out, Crater Lake RV Park hosts a special get-together every Saturday night filled with fiddlers, hot dogs, lemonade, and s’mores. As campers roast hot dogs and marshmallows over an open fire, they are treated to American folk songs and invited to waltz or square dance to these historic tunes. Guests are led through square dancing steps, so all can enjoy it!
Sunday morning was just as charming. The campground hosts a weekly breakfast with delicious pancakes, sausage, and orange juice, so we were able to enjoy the morning with newfound friends we had met the night before. Together, these two events really help form a sense of community and shared experiences. And the campground staff and hosts made us all feel as welcome as family rather than just another group of campers passing through. For folks like us who travel full-time, it is special to encounter such genuine friendliness.
Aside from the campground itself are local places to explore. Crater Lake RV Park is named for its proximity to- you guessed it- Crater Lake National Park, which is only about a half hour drive away. Even closer to the campground, right in the town of Prospect, is the Mill Creek Falls Trail, which leads to two gorgeous waterfalls and the Avenue of the Boulders, where rapids rush right past the viewing areas.
Should you find yourself planning a trip to Crater Lake National Park (or anywhere at all near Prospect, Oregon), I am certain you’ll find Crater Lake RV Park to be a delightful place to call “home” during your stay.
